A man from California has confessed to the horrific crime of killing his teenage half-brother with a pickaxe in a shed located behind their residence.

Zuberi Sharp, aged 26, entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder on Monday for the brutal slaying of his 15-year-old half-brother, Zayde Koehohou, which occurred on December 5, 2024. According to a statement from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, the tragic incident unfolded in a converted shed at their Newbury Park home. The boys’ uncle, upon hearing a “thud” while checking on them, made the gruesome discovery.

Upon entering the shed, the uncle found Sharp standing over Zayde, holding a pickaxe.

Before the authorities arrived, Sharp fled the scene. The boys’ mother, Jante Keohohou, had dialed 911 around 8 p.m. Deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office later apprehended Sharp at a nearby high school. He was found naked and still carrying the weapon used in the attack.

When the deputies arrived, they found Zayde’s mother holding him in her lap. Zayde, who had cerebral palsy, had sustained multiple severe head injuries. Tragically, he was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital.

According to local CW affiliate KTLA, Sharp apparently suffered from mental issues and had to be rescued from a storm drain hours before he killed Zayde. In an interview with local news outlet Thousand Oaks Acorn about a month after the crime, Keohohou said her older son “didn’t know what he was doing” and Sharp “loves his brothers, my boys loved each other.”

KTLA reported that Sharp is the son of a convicted murderer, Calvin Sharp, who killed a 6-year-old boy with a meat cleaver in 2007.

Sharp pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as well as the special circumstances added to the charges, including the attack on a vulnerable person. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 5.
