In a tragic case that has shocked the community, a Florida man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the brutal death of his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son, Josiyah Robinson. The incident, which took place during a move to a new home, left the boy fatally injured after a severe beating with a belt. The child’s only mistake was accidentally locking the car keys inside the vehicle.

Tyrone Covington, a 45-year-old U.S. Army veteran with service tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was initially facing a first-degree murder charge. However, in January, a jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter along with aggravated child abuse. On Monday, a judge handed down the 30-year sentence, as confirmed by the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office.

The heartbreaking events unfolded on October 22, 2020, when Josiyah’s mother made a frantic call to 911. Her son had been severely beaten and was struggling to breathe before lapsing into unconsciousness. Paramedics swiftly transported him to a local hospital, and he was later airlifted to a children’s hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

“This was not merely a form of punishment. The excessive beating this child endured ultimately led to his death,” stated Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister in a press release, highlighting the severity of the abuse Josiyah suffered.

According to a courtroom report by the Tampa Bay Times, the family was in the midst of relocating, transporting their belongings in several carloads. It was late when the mother realized her keys were locked inside the car. She placed the blame on Josiyah and turned to Covington to administer discipline, a decision that tragically spiraled out of control.

After a locksmith opened the door, the Army vet took a belt and started whipping the boy in addition to forcing him to complete military exercises such as pushups, sit-ups and jumping jacks.

When confronted with abuse allegations, Covington tried to point the finger at the boy’s then-14-year-old brother, who he claimed would occasionally hit his siblings. But neither the jury nor the judge believed Covington.

“He didn’t commit that crime,” Circuit Judge Lyann Goudie reportedly told Covington. “It was you.”

Now 19, the boy spoke at sentencing about the helpless feeling he endured while witnessing the brutal beating.

“I see it over and over, my brother being beaten, while I sit against that wall,” he said. “I ask myself constantly, if only I had done something, if only I’d stopped Tyrone, would my brother still be here?”

The judge had harsh words before sentencing Covington to prison.

“When I stop, Mr. Covington, and think about how Josiyah spent the last hour of his life feeling fear, it makes me sick,” Goudie reportedly said.
