Tragedy struck in Georgia when a 19-year-old woman, Nina Ramirez, lost her life after her boyfriend mistakenly shot her in the head during what they thought was an innocent game with a gun. The weapon, unknown to them, was loaded.

Sebastian Prestridge, also 19, now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter following this devastating incident, as reported by WSB.

The heartbreaking event unfolded during a sleepover hosted at the Ramirez family home. As Nina’s mother, Maria Carmen Ramirez, recounted, the group of friends were gathered together when the shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday. The firearm in question belonged to an acquaintance of Prestridge.

“They were playing with the gun,” Maria Ramirez explained, emphasizing the tragic oversight that no one verified whether the gun was loaded before it was handled and passed around as part of their ill-fated game.

Authorities noted that Prestridge stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with the investigation, a small consolation in the face of an avoidable loss.

Ramirez said she believes the shooting “was just an accident” but says it’s a wake up call about gun safety.

“People have to take care of the guns and save it in a safe place,” she said. “It’s not okay that this kind of accidents happen.”

“This is an incredibly tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Captain Dena Pauly, public information officer for the Lawrenceville Police Department. “Our investigators are working diligently to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this young woman’s death.”

Prestridge is being held without bond, Law&Crime reported.
