In a tragic incident in Arizona, a teenager forced his way into his former girlfriend’s home and fatally shot her while she lay in bed, before turning his attention towards her mother.

Emilio Rivera, 18, was formally charged with the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Rhiana Kemplin, a crime that occurred a week prior, according to a report by KSAZ.

Legal documents reveal that after Kemplin’s death, Rivera attempted to shoot her mother, but the gun malfunctioned. The mother recounted to police that she witnessed a man, believed to be Rivera, aim the weapon at her and pull the trigger twice. Fortunately, the gun did not discharge, prompting Rivera to flee the scene. She then called 911 and, tragically, discovered her daughter had been killed.

A court representative described the incident as an act of domestic violence, stating, “Rivera is accused of entering the victim’s home under the cover of night and shooting her in the head. The victim also sustained a gunshot wound to her hand, indicative of a defensive attempt.”

Neighbors reportedly heard both the gunshot and subsequent screams.

Rivera told police that he had been in Kemplin’s room that night, saying they argued because he’d found evidence she had been cheating on him, even though court documents say they were no longer seeing each other. He said he left and came back to slash tires in hopes of keeping her from seeing other people, but he denied shooting her.

But police matched a gun found in Rivera’s mother’s home to the one used in the murder.

In addition to murder, he has been charged with attempted murder, KPHO reported. Police said he was arrested on unrelated charges on the day of the shooting.

Rivera was ordered held on a $1 million bond. He is due back in court on Thursday.
