Omayrilin Colon, 37, is now facing charges that include murder and first-degree cruelty to children, according to jail records. Local news station WSB-TV reports that Atlanta police responded to a call on October 14 regarding an unresponsive infant at an apartment on Perry Boulevard. The child was quickly taken to a hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The initial examination found no visible signs of trauma, prompting authorities to conduct an autopsy and toxicology tests. These tests revealed the infant had a BAC of .179, over twice the legal limit for an adult to drive. According to WSB-TV, the cause of death was determined to be alcohol poisoning.

Further investigation uncovered a disturbing detail: the alcohol poisoning was intentional, according to police findings. Investigators concluded that Colon deliberately filled her son’s bottle with alcohol, ruling out breast milk as the source. The specific type of alcohol used and the motive behind Colon’s alleged actions remain unknown.

What police discovered next was shocking: The alcohol poisoning was no accident, investigators determined. Colon purposefully filled the boy’s bottle with alcohol, cops say. Investigators were also able to determine that the booze came from the bottle and did not pass through breast milk. It’s unclear what type of alcohol was used and why Colon would allegedly do such a thing to her own child.

Police obtained an arrest warrant after the toxicology reports came back.

Colon was arrested on Thursday and remains in the Fulton County Jail without bond. It’s unclear when she is next slated to appear in court.

Neighbors told WSB they were stunned.

“It’s not necessary to cause harm to anyone, let alone children,” the neighbor said. “It’s heartbreaking and maddening.”
