In a deeply unsettling incident, authorities in Alaska have apprehended a 29-year-old man following the tragic shooting of his grandmother. The victim, 87-year-old Velma Koontz, was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to the back of her head, found in her wheelchair earlier this week.
Brian Davenport, the suspect, allegedly confessed to police that he initially intended to target someone else when he took his grandfather’s firearm. However, he ultimately redirected his violent plan towards his grandmother, as reported by KTUU.
The heartbreaking discovery was made by Koontz’s husband, who returned from a store trip to find the handgun discarded outside and his wife deceased inside their home.
In a bizarre twist leading up to the arrest, Davenport called 911 but remained silent with the dispatcher, only providing an address before hanging up. Police tracked him down shortly thereafter, observing him pacing along the roadside. Officers described his behavior as “careless,” noting that he was walking dangerously close to traffic. He was subsequently taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.
Further insights into Davenport’s charges and the case details can be explored in the article titled Fairbanks Man Charged With Murder, authored by kc wildmoon.
Once police learned about Koontz’s death and Davenport’s connection, the officer who brought him to the hospital asked him about it. He replied that he had killed someone.
Davenport was brought in for questioning. He admitted stealing his grandfather’s gun and killing his grandmother after he was read his rights. He reportedly told detectives that he wanted his grandmother to go peacefully without worrying “about the legacy she left behind,” according to the charging documents. He compared his decision to shoot her in the back of the head to “pulling the plug.”
Police later learned that Koontz was in hospice care and had cancer.
Davenport was charged with first degree murder and was ordered held on a $5 million bail.
