An Illinois woman is now facing a potential prison sentence of several decades after the tragic death of her 6-year-old son, who was subjected to a prolonged cold shower as punishment, a day shy of his birthday.
Jannie Perry, aged 42, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder charges related to the death of her son, Damari Perry, in North Chicago, according to court documentation. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors have recommended a sentence of up to 45 years. In exchange for her plea, additional charges against her, such as dismembering a human body, conspiracy, and corpse abuse, were dropped. Perry’s sentencing is scheduled for January 30.
At the time of the incident, prosecutors indicated that Jannie Perry, alongside her 20-year-old son Jeremiah Perry and another minor, devised and executed a plan to punish Damari by exposing him to a cold shower for an extended period.
The family was reportedly upset with Damari due to an incident on December 29, 2021, leading them to subject him to the cold shower the following day as a form of discipline. It wasn’t until over a week later that they falsely reported him missing to the Skokie Police Department on January 5, 2022.
As detailed by Newsweek, Damari’s 16-year-old sister allegedly informed investigators that on January 4, 2022, a man drove her and her brother to a party in Skokie, where she consumed too much alcohol and passed out. Upon regaining consciousness, she claimed the man and Damari were no longer present.
In fact, Damari’s body had been burned after his death. His brother, Jeremiah Perry, then allegedly dumped his remains in a Gary, Indiana, neighborhood.
A grand jury indicted Jannie Perry and her son in February 2022, saying the murder was exceptionally brutal and heinous. Jeremiah Perry’s case remains ongoing.
“As prosecutors considered the crime scene where Damari died, it became clear that this was a calculated plan against a small child. Damari’s final minutes warrant the sentencing enhancements that accompany such ‘brutal and heinous’ circumstances,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said after the indictment. “The defendants’ stunning failure to seek medical attention demonstrates their intent to end Damari’s life. Transporting and burning the body as part of a cover up also warranted the additional serious charges we filed.”
