Tragic Incident: Mother Injured in Ankle Shooting While Shopping at Walmart with Children

In a startling incident at a Walmart in Valdosta, Georgia, a mother shopping with her young children was injured by bullet shrapnel in both ankles. This occurred after a man’s handgun accidentally discharged, authorities have reported.

The incident unfolded on June 9, when 21-year-old John Eady was inside the store. According to the Valdosta Police Department, Eady’s firearm accidentally fired into the ground as he attempted to retrieve his cellphone from his pocket.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the police department explained that Eady was carrying the gun in the front pocket of his basketball-style shorts, alongside his cellphone. Notably, the firearm was not secured in a holster.

As Eady reached for his phone, the gun discharged, sending shrapnel from the bullet and pieces of the floor tiles toward a 34-year-old woman, resulting in injuries to her ankles.

Official reports from the Valdosta Police Department indicate that the woman sustained a gunshot wound to her lower leg during the incident.

The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers determined that Eady was carrying the firearm in a manner that was a gross deviation from the standard of care that a reasonable person would have exercised in a similar situation,” the police department says.

“We are very thankful that no one received more severe injuries, as the victim was shopping with her small children,” adds VPD Chief Leslie Manahan in a statement. “This serves as a reminder that carrying a firearm is a significant responsibility. Firearms should be carried in a secure holster or in another secure manner to prevent unintentional contact with the trigger, reducing the risk of an unintended discharge.”

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Eady on June 10. He turned himself in and was charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless conduct.

Eady was being held at the Lowndes County Jail.
