A tragic incident unfolded in Minnesota as a mother allegedly ended her 18-month-old daughter’s life by spiking her bottle with a substantial quantity of sleep medication after losing custody of the child.

Authorities in Champlin, a suburb of Minneapolis, responded to a distress call at a residence on Castle Rock Court on Friday. Upon arrival, police discovered an unresponsive toddler and an adult woman exhibiting symptoms of a suicide attempt. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where the child was sadly declared deceased.

The mother, identified as 23-year-old Maige Elizabeth Yang, is now charged with second-degree murder for the death of her daughter, De’Ali Blia Delgado. Following her release from medical care, Yang has been detained at the Hennepin County Jail, with bail set at $1.5 million.

During the investigation, officers spoke with Yang’s parents, who revealed that their daughter had attended a court hearing earlier that day. At the hearing, temporary custody of the child was awarded to the father. After returning home, Yang reportedly took De’Ali to an upstairs bedroom. Later, Yang’s father attempted to access the room but found it locked, according to the parents’ account to the authorities.

He eventually forced the door open, discovering the young girl on the floor with bluish lips. In a desperate effort to save her, he carried the child downstairs and immediately called 911.

After receiving her Miranda rights, Yang allegedly admitted to pouring a “significant amount” of sleep medication into her daughter’s bottle in order to “make the pain go away.” She then fed the bottle to De’Ali hoping the girl would “pass peacefully in her sleep,” cops wrote.

De’Ali’s father, Erick Delgado, started a GoFundMe to raise money for a funeral for his “beautiful princess.” He wrote:

It’s with my heart shattered that I write this post. My baby girl De’Ali Blia Delgado was not just taken away from me, She was murdered. I did everything right. Today I was suppose to wake up right next to my daughter.

I had finally won custody of my beautiful baby on Friday , January 9th at 11:30Am and by 4Pm her life was gone. I fought my hardest for you, and the justice system failed you.

Yang is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 10.
