On a typical Thursday afternoon, Bryce Tate makes his usual stop at the gym after school.
Mid-workout, Bryce receives an unexpected text from an unknown number. The sender introduces herself as a junior from a nearby high school, claiming to have noticed Bryce at the gym before.
The mystery texter mentions she knows some of Bryce’s friends, who have spoken highly of his basketball talents, and expresses a desire to get to know him better. The two teens exchange playful messages throughout the afternoon.
Returning home from the gym, Bryce is in high spirits, engrossed in his lively chat with the intriguing stranger. His mood lifts even more when he discovers it’s taco night, and he eagerly shares the day’s events with his parents over dinner.
After dinner, Bryce heads outside to practice basketball, but his concentration is broken by thoughts of his newfound friend.
Just after 7 p.m., Amanda and Adam Tate are shocked by the sound of a gunshot and rush into Adam’s man cave. Their happy teenager shot himself. The hysterical parents called 911, but Bryce was gone the moment he pulled the trigger.
What no one understands is why Bryce would take his own life.
In the 20 minutes before taking his own life, Bryce receives 120 text messages. The messages reveal that Bryce offers the only money he has access to $30. But it isn’t enough.
