Emily Finn, an 18-year-old student from the State University of New York Oneonta, tragically lost her life the day before Thanksgiving. She had returned home and visited her ex-boyfriend’s house to give back some of his possessions.
Sadly, she never returned home.
According to Suffolk County Police, her 17-year-old former boyfriend fatally shot her before turning the gun on himself, as reported by Newsday. His parents, alarmed by the sound of gunfire, immediately called 911. While Finn was pronounced dead at the scene, the young man survived and is currently in critical but stable condition at the hospital.
Austin Lynch, who turned 18 the following day, faces charges of second-degree murder, according to The New York Post.
Remembered for her grace and empathy, Finn had been a devoted dancer at the American Ballet Studio in Bayport. Artistic Director Kathy Kairns-Scholz described her as both talented and compassionate. In her memory, the studio will dedicate its performances of “The Nutcracker” this year to honor her legacy.
Finn was studying to be a teacher at SUNY, with a minor in dance.
The Youth Peace and Justice Foundation announced it would sponsor an annual scholarship in her name.
