An investigation is currently unfolding in Ohio after a devastating house fire claimed the lives of five children and a woman on Tuesday.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in Clarksville, where they discovered an unresponsive man on the ground floor of the residence. According to WCPO, upon gaining access to the second floor, they found the bodies of a woman and four children.
Efforts to reach the second floor were initially hampered by a collapsed stairway. The News Journal reported that among the deceased children, one was an infant.
Initial reports mentioned a fifth child who was initially unaccounted for. Sadly, this child was later confirmed deceased, though specifics have not been released.
Officials have yet to publicly release the identities of the victims. However, the Clinton Massie Local School District revealed that three of the children attended elementary school in the district.
“This morning, our district became aware of a tragic house fire in our community. Authorities have confirmed the deaths of a mother, three of our students, and an infant. This is devastating news for our school community. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family’s loved ones and all who are impacted,” school officials said in a statement issued to WKEF.
Eight firefighters were injured in Tuesday’s fire, but officials said they were all treated at the scene and released.
The man’s condition was not disclosed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
