In a disturbing incident in Pennsylvania, a man stands accused of fatally assaulting a woman in an apartment, allegedly due to feeling “embarrassed” and being left to care for their child alone. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Andre Romulus, now faces charges of criminal homicide, according to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime. After a weekend-long manhunt, authorities apprehended Romulus on Monday.
The tragic event unfolded early Saturday morning, around 2:20 a.m., when officers from the Chambersburg Police Department responded to a welfare check at a residence on West Washington Street in Chambersburg, a town located roughly 150 miles west of Philadelphia. Upon arrival, officers were approached by an individual who requested they check on a female resident’s well-being, as detailed in a statement by the police department.
The individual who alerted the authorities reportedly had connections to both Romulus and the victim. As outlined in an affidavit accessed by PennLive, this person received alarming text messages from Romulus between Friday evening at 9:30 p.m. and the early hours of Saturday morning. Around 1:37 a.m., Romulus allegedly sent a chilling message indicating that the recipient “won’t see him again” and urged them to send someone to check on the woman involved.
Further communications from Romulus allegedly revealed his distress, as he claimed the victim was leaving him and abandoning him with their child. In his messages, he also sought a temporary place to stay for the night, underscoring the volatile situation that had escalated to tragic violence.
Romulus also reportedly told the man that the victim was leaving him and “left him alone with their child,” and he was asking for a place to stay the night.
Officers entered the home to find a woman “unconscious, unresponsive,” and needing medical assistance, authorities said. She is said to have been lying in a pool of blood on the floor next to a bed after having “sustained severe trauma to the front of her face.” Though first responders treated her, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
It is unclear whether a child was also found at the residence.
A preliminary investigation found that the woman died from blunt force trauma, and police identified Romulus as a suspect in her death. However, he had left the area, and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was enlisted to assist the police department in finding him and taking him into custody.
On Monday, they did — locating him in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, about 55 miles northeast of Chambersburg. Upon executing a search warrant for Romulus’ apartment, investigators found several messages inside, including that the suspect accused the victim of being “evil” and “embarrassing him,” per PennLive. He also allegedly referenced attacking her on a previous occasion.
Romulus is due in Franklin County court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 30.
