In a tragic development, the former owner of the renowned “Home Alone” house, John M. Abendshien, was found dead just days following his arrest on charges related to child sexual abuse. This shocking news has reverberated through the community, casting a shadow over the legacy of the famous property featured in the beloved film.

Abendshien’s body was discovered on April 22 at the Lake Forest Open Lands: Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve in Illinois. According to reports from NBC 5 Chicago and Fox 32, the authorities have confirmed his death. The Lake Forest Police Chief, John Burke, shared that preliminary autopsy results point to asphyxia, suggesting a self-inflicted cause.

The Lake Forest Coroner’s Office has stated that this incident appears to be isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago. This assurance comes as a relief to the residents who have been grappling with the startling circumstances surrounding Abendshien’s death.

The 79-year-old’s passing follows closely on the heels of his legal troubles. He had recently been charged with seven counts of felony possession of child sexual abuse material, a development that was officially announced by the Lake Forest Police Department. This series of events has left many in shock, as the backdrop of the beloved “Home Alone” house now carries a starkly different narrative.

The 79-year-old’s death comes days after he was charged with seven counts of felony possession of child sexual abuse material, according to a press release from the Lake Forest Police Department

Police executed a search warrant on Abendshien’s home after receiving cyber tips that an online account associated with him was in possession, manufacture, or distribution of child sexual abuse material, per the release.

Abendshien attended a detention hearing on April 17 and had been released with conditions, per the press release. He was set to reappear in court May 28 for a preliminary hearing, per court records reviewed by Oxygen.

From 1998 to 2012, Abendshien owned the famous home at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, which was featured in the 1990 film Home Alone and the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2 starring Macaulay Culkin and Catherine O’Hara.

He detailed the experience of living there during filming in his 2025 memoir, Home But Alone No More.

“After the shoots, the cast and crew just hung around because they were away from home themselves,” Abendshien told ABC 7 Chicago in December. “The home became kind of a second home to them.”

In 2025, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home sold for $5.5 million.
