In a tragic incident that unfolded in Savannah, Georgia, a family is mourning the loss of a father after a dispute over a parking spot turned deadly outside a local Target store. Authorities have charged 30-year-old Tyler Linn with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the fatal shooting.
The Savannah Police Department revealed the charges on Monday, following the events that took place around 4 p.m. on Sunday. The altercation occurred at the Target located on Abercorn Street, although details about whether the victim was accompanied remain unclear. What is known is that the confrontation in the parking lot escalated between Linn and another man, identified as Matthew Traywick, a father of three.
During the argument, Linn allegedly drew a firearm and shot Traywick, inflicting severe gunshot wounds. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, finding Traywick critically injured. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he tragically did not survive the injuries.
In a notable aspect of the incident, Linn did not flee the scene. He stayed until law enforcement arrived and was subsequently taken into custody. As the community grapples with this senseless act, the charges against Linn highlight the gravity of this devastating loss.
Linn, police noted, remained at the scene of the shooting. He was arrested.
“The shooting occurred as a result of an argument over a parking spot,” Savannah District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee said, per local CBS affiliate WTOC.
Savannah Mayor Van Johnson expressed his condolences and outrage over the “tragic act of violence in a place where people should feel safe.”
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim,” Johnson said. “No disagreement over a parking space, or anything else should ever end in the loss of life. This needless, unnecessary violence underscores the daily pain felt by families across our city and the urgency of our collective work to reduce gun violence and strengthen community safety.”
While Traywick’s age is unclear, a post by his former employer and a GoFundMe set up to help his family show his children are young and that he was “the sole provider for their family.”
According to WTOC, Linn served in the United States Army from 2015 to 2023.
As of Monday, the investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
