In a heart-wrenching turn of events on Thanksgiving Day, tragedy struck a Louisiana family when a sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot, allegedly by his own brother. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office announced with profound sorrow the death of Deputy Shaquille Guerin, 35, who was killed on November 27 in the neighboring Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Local news outlets, including WDSU and WVUE, reported that deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene where they found Guerin, a father of three, lying in the street with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead on-site.

Authorities revealed that Shaquille’s brother, Darius Guerin, had fled the scene by car. When law enforcement officials located him, he allegedly refused to stop, prompting a chase. The pursuit ended when Darius abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Deputies managed to apprehend him, recover his firearm, and take him into custody.

Darius was arrested that night and now faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated flight from an officer, and obstruction of justice, according to records from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing, and details about Darius’s arraignment or if he has legal representation remain unclear.

Shaquille Guerin served with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office for over eight years, contributing significantly to both the uniform patrol division and the detective bureau. His colleagues remember him fondly, with Sheriff Tregre expressing that Shaquille embodied the heart of a public servant. In a heartfelt statement, Tregre praised him for his positivity and dedication as a teammate and employee.

Shaquille is survived by his wife Roxanne and their three children, according to the sheriff.
