In a heart-wrenching turn of events, an Alabama woman learned during her bond hearing that her son had tragically died in a car crash she is accused of causing.

Delyshia Molette, aged 34, appeared in court on Wednesday facing a manslaughter charge related to a fatal accident on Monday. Reports from WKRG, a local CBS affiliate, reveal that Mobile police testified Molette was allegedly driving at speeds of up to 90 mph when she crashed into a light pole. Her two sons, aged 7 and 11, were in the car with her at the time. Neither child was wearing a seatbelt, and tragically, the 7-year-old died as a result of the crash.

The devastating news of her son’s death was delivered to Molette while she was in court.

Overcome with emotion, Molette reportedly cried out, “Did you say he died? My 7-year-old died?”

The accident also left Molette’s 11-year-old son critically injured, suffering from brain bleeding. Police explained that Molette was fleeing from Semmes police at the time of the crash. This pursuit followed an alleged incident earlier that day at a Publix store, where Molette reportedly assaulted an officer after being confronted for shoplifting, as captured on store surveillance footage.

Police said that Molette allegedly attacked the officer by trying to gouge out his eyes and biting his finger until he lost feeling in it. Molette then fled the store on foot. She was later spotted by Semmes police in her car, and a pursuit followed. Al.com obtained court documents that said police stopped chasing her after noticing her children in the car.

According to WKRG’s reporting on the court hearing, Molette said that she fled police because she did not want her children to be taken by the state’s Department of Human Resources.

Molette was taken into custody following the crash and charged with several felonies in connection with the alleged incident at Publix as well as the crash, including manslaughter, resisting arrest, attempting to elude, robbery, and assault. She was denied bond during Wednesday’s hearing and remains in custody at the Mobile County Jail.
