The father of a young child from Oregon, whose body was found in the Siletz River following an extensive 11-day search earlier this year, is now facing a misdemeanor charge for neglect.
According to court documents, Aaron Paulsen was allegedly responsible for the care of his son, Dane Paulsen, when he reportedly left the toddler unattended in a manner deemed likely to endanger his well-being. The child’s age was under ten, as detailed by a report from KATU.
Two-year-old Dane Paulsen was reported missing on March 1, with the last sighting being him playing in the front yard, as noted by CrimeOnline. A swift and comprehensive search ensued, ultimately leading to the discovery of his body approximately three miles downstream from his home on March 11.
The cause of death was determined to be drowning, according to KATU.
When approached this week by KATU, Aaron Paulsen chose not to provide any comments. However, Dane’s mother, Chamet Jackson, mentioned that Paulsen had just returned home around the time of the child’s disappearance.
Jackson told KPTV she had questions about the investigation and believes there’s more to the story. She recalled the day Dane went missing, saying she had gone to check on her father in a backyard trailer when she heard the boy come looking for her. But by the time she got back outside, Dane was gone.
“I’ve asked so many times throughout this entire time and they’ve all pretty much been like, I’m reaching or I’m crazy, or you’re some hysterical mother who lives on Siletz reservation. Some native kid. He doesn’t matter to them,” Jackson said.
“I just want justice for my son and answers for Dane,” she said. “He deserves that.”
Aaron Paulsen is set to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge on Monday.
