President Donald Trump cleared a significant hurdle in his defamation lawsuit against the Pulitzer Prize Board as a Florida court of appeals on Wednesday decided a procedural issue in his favor.

In his lawsuit, Trump sued several individual members of the media awards board — only one of whom is, like him, also a Florida resident.

In January 2024, the non-Floridian members of the board moved to dismiss the case against them for lack of personal jurisdiction — or, in nonlegal terms, a lack of contacts with, or actions in, the Sunshine State. The judge overseeing the case denied that motion last summer.

On appeal, the lower court’s ruling was confirmed.

“The circuit court concluded that the exercise of personal jurisdiction over the eighteen defendants was proper,” the appeals court opinion reads. “We agree. Trump’s operative pleading sufficiently pled that the defendants engaged in a conspiracy to defame him.”
