The bodies of two South Carolina women were found in the Rembert area of Sumter County, and at least one of them is confirmed to have died of a gunshot wound.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has launched a homicide investigation after the remains of Kristen N. Grissom, 38, of North Charleston, and Christine Marie McAbee, 35 and from Walterboro, were discovered on the afternoon of August 8.
A landowner discovered the bodies in a clearing and deputies responded at around 1:17 p.m. to the location on Richbow Road. “The bodies appeared to have been placed at the location,” the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.
The deaths appear to be an isolated incident and there is currently not a known danger to the public, according to Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
Dennis has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to help with the investigation.
What happened to Kristen Grissom and Christine McAbee?
One of the two victims, McAbee, died from a gunshot wound, an autopsy confirmed, according to South Carolina station WIS-TV. An autopsy for the second woman, Grissom, was still in progress on the afternoon of Aug. 12, when officials held a press conference at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The women were believed to have been dead for about a day before their bodies were found, Baker said, according to CBS News. They were identified through tattoos, fingerprints, and DNA analysis.
While McAbee’s death is being investigated as a homicide, Grissom’s death is being investigated as a potential homicide until the autopsy is complete.
Dennis said that the women knew each other, though details were not provided.
He added at the press conference that several tips have come in on the case, but didn’t say whether investigators had a suspect yet.
