GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Samuel Alexander Gold, 20, was arrested today for allegedly throwing a basketball rim over a fence during a fraternity party on October 4, seriously injuring a victim on the other side of the fence.

According to the responding University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) officer, at about 2 p.m. on October 4, during a game-day event in the back yard of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Gold allegedly threw an 11.5-pound broken metal basketball rim over an eight-foot privacy fence into the back yard of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, which was also holding a game-day event.

The rim reportedly hit the victim in the head, causing a laceration that required seven staples.

In a post-Miranda interview today at the UFPD Headquarters, Gold reportedly admitted he had been intoxicated and had thrown the basketball rim over the fence at the suggestion of another fraternity member. He said he was unaware that the basketball rim had hit anyone.

Gold has been charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, a felony. He has no local criminal history; bail will be set on October 10.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
