A 32-year-old individual, who was recently shot by Houston police, had a history of charges related to child offenses in Nevada.
As reported by FOX 26 Houston, Jacques Bassey faced 13 charges in Clark County, Nevada, which included serious accusations such as human trafficking, multiple counts of sexual assault on a child, and aggravated kidnapping of a minor. These grave allegations highlight the severity of his past crimes.
In October 2024, Bassey accepted a plea bargain, confessing to a charge of sexual seduction. Despite the gravity of his prior offenses, a judge in Clark County permitted him to remain at liberty until his sentencing set for January 2025.
However, after entering his plea, Bassey fled to Houston, evading the pending legal repercussions.
While residing in Houston, Bassey was apprehended last year for allegedly committing theft against elderly individuals. More recently, during a traffic stop on Antoine Drive, he reportedly engaged in a gunfight with Houston police officers.
“He believed he was wanted and that’s the reason he decided to shoot it out with officers,” Douglas Griffith, President of the Houston Police Officers Union, said.
Following a high-speed chase, Bassey allegedly exited his vehicle and fled down a sidewalk with a firearm, a witness told KHOU.
Security footage showed the suspect hiding behind vehicles as he opened fire on two officers, who were not injured. The officers returned fire and shot Bassey, who still had on his GPS monitor from the Nevada case.
First responders took him to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
“We’ve seen this play out in Harris County multiple times. Only this time, it happens in Nevada, but it came back to haunt us in Houston,” Andy Kahan, with Houston Crime Stoppers, told FOX 26.
According to Houston PD, authorities charged with Bassey with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest, following the incident.
