A former Virginia neonatal nurse has been arrested in connection with injuries suffered by babies in the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Henrico County Police Department said the charges against 26-year-old Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman stem from one incident in November but that they are looking at other incidents at the hospital that happened in 2024 and 2023.

Police said they were “utilizing all available resources to ensure a thorough investigation into this matter,” including “reviewing dozens of videos from inside the NICU.”

Strotman was arraigned on charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse Friday morning and ordered held without bond, WRIC reported.

Strotman confirmed at the hearing that she had been a nurse at the hospital and said she didn’t know she had been fired.

The hospital said on December 24 that three babies were discovered with “unexplained fractures” in November and December and that similar incidents had occurred with four babies in 2023.

The hospital said in a statement that it was no longer accepting infants into the NICU, although all other labor and delivery services were still available. For those infants who need intensive care, the hospital said, it would make sure they were stabilized and transfer them to another NICU.

“For more than 30 years, the NICU at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU has provided necessary and life-saving care to babies in central Virginia and we remain focused on ensuring the availability of that care in our community,” said Laura Petrosky, HCA Virginia’s assistant vice president of strategic communications.

Police said they would provide further information as it becomes available and does not compromise the ongoing investigation.

Strotman is due in court again on March 24.
