Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jaquan Tyrell Jones, 30, was arrested early yesterday morning and charged with felony property damage after allegedly using a glass punch to damage 13 glass doors at the Wawa across from campus (1614 W. University Ave.).
At about 3:29 a.m., Jones allegedly entered the Wawa and used a glass punch tool to break 13 glass doors on beverage cases. An employee of the business told the responding Gainesville Police Department Officer that each door is worth about $1,000, so the total damage was approximately $13,000.
Post Miranda, Jones reportedly said he broke the glass doors because he had a warrant out of Virginia and was tired of running. The officer noted that no arrest warrant was found for Jones.
Jones, who is described as homeless in court documents, has a criminal history in Virginia from 2011 to 2024, cases in other Florida counties in the past 2 years, and one Florida felony conviction (non-violent). Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $5,000.
