According to prosecutors, thousands of people who contributed to Steve Bannon’s We Build The Wall fundraising activities claim they were duped. The claims of fraud made on behalf of the donors led to the arrest of Bannon, a former strategist to Donald Trump, along with three other people.

Steve Bannon, a former political adviser to Trump, was detained on August 20, 2020.
Bannon was detained for scamming contributors in a border wall plan, according to the Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Along with Brian Kolfage, Andred Badolato, and Timothy Shea, who were also charged in relation to the fraud allegations, he was captured by police.

The four people previously listed, along with Bannon, were charged with money laundering.
The four were apprehended on suspicion of defrauding donors to the We Build The Wall online fundraising campaign.
Federal prosecutors claimed that Bannon and three other people “orchestrated a conspiracy to swindle hundreds of thousands of donations.”

Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss stated in a statement that “as charged, the defendants misled hundreds of thousands of donors, relying on their enthusiasm in building a border wall to raise millions of dollars, under the false assumption that all of that money would be used for construction.”
The defendants “repeatedly promised contributors that Brian Kolfage, the originator and public face of We Build the Wall, would not be paid a cent, but surreptitiously plotted to transfer Kolfage hundreds of thousands of dollars, which he used to support his opulent lifestyle.”
However, on January 20, 2021, for one of his last acts as president, Trump pardoned Bannon before he departed the White House and absolved him of the charges.
Steve Bannon Sentenced To jail
Bannon may have received a pardon for the charges connected to the We Build the Wall campaign, but in 2022 he was back in court when he violated a subpoena from the House committee during their investigation into the January 6 Capitol Riots.
According to The New York Times, he was convicted in that case on two counts of contempt of Congress and given a four-month prison term on October 21, 2022.
He may have received a four-month prison term, but The New York Times reports that he will continue to be free while his case is being appealed.
