Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss stated in a statement that “as charged, the defendants misled hundreds of thousands of donors, relying on their enthusiasm in building a border wall to raise millions of dollars, under the false assumption that all of that money would be used for construction.”

The defendants “repeatedly promised contributors that Brian Kolfage, the originator and public face of We Build the Wall, would not be paid a cent, but surreptitiously plotted to transfer Kolfage hundreds of thousands of dollars, which he used to support his opulent lifestyle.”
