In a dramatic case from Pennsylvania, a woman’s intention to divorce her spouse and sell their residence reportedly pushed him into a violent rage, culminating in him physically assaulting and attempting to set her ablaze, according to officials.

Eric Dale Smith, aged 61, is facing a slew of charges, as revealed by court documents examined by Law&Crime. These include criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated arson with resultant bodily harm, and strangulation. He remains in custody at the York County Jail with bail set at $200,000.

The woman successfully fled to a neighbor for help, where the neighbor called for emergency services. She sustained visible injuries, including swelling and bruises on her forehead, eye, and neck.

When Pennsylvania State Police and other authorities arrived on the scene, investigators concluded that the fire was ignited using paint thinner, as per WGAL’s report. Smith was subsequently taken into custody.

The defendant had a preliminary hearing on Friday and is due back in court on Aug. 14.
