A South Carolina man has been arrested for the murder of a man whose body was found in pieces last month.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said that John Lucas Rice, 21, has been charged with the murder of Kevin Scott Brookshire, who disappeared in December 2021, WHNS reported.

The sheriff’s office said it had received information on August 22 from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office alleging that Rice had shown a witness a decomposing body in a trash bag in the back yard of a home in Cherokee County. Deputies went to the home that day with cadaver dogs and found human remains, later identified as Brookshire.

Multiple pieces of the body were found in different locations, officials said.

Rice was located in Shelby, North Carolina, about 20 miles across the state line, and allegedly confessed to killing Brookshire. He waived an extradition hearing and was brought back to Cherokee County.

Rice is being held without bond, WYFF said.
