A woman is accused of fatally stabbing her intermittent boyfriend with a screwdriver during a heated dispute.
Jayla Brown, 22, faces a murder charge following the death of 21-year-old Keylan Foreman, who succumbed to his injuries after a late-night confrontation in December. This information comes from a press release dated February 2, issued by the Houston Police Department.
On December 27, authorities discovered Keylan with multiple stab injuries, as detailed in a charging document for aggravated assault, provided by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to Oxygen. Keylan was found “unconscious, bleeding, and suffering from lacerations to his left cheek and nose,” according to the document.
Emergency responders rushed Keylan to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for facial cuts and brain swelling.
A hospital spokesperson informed police that Keylan exhibited no brain activity and was reliant on a ventilator to breathe, as noted in the charging document. He passed away on January 19, which is reflected in a subsequent murder charge document shared with Oxygen by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
Jayla told authorities in the charging document that she and Keylan were in an “on-again, off-again” relationship for several years. At first, Jayla told police that she “heard people arguing, looked over and saw … Foreman on the ground bleeding.”
Later, she admitted, “No, I hit him after he jacked me up.”
Jayla also told police that she and Keylan were arguing in her car and she ordered him out, opening the door for him because he was on crutches. She said Keylan hit her in the face, so she struck him with a screwdriver and then “blacked out.”
According to Jayla, she didn’t have enough gas to drive to a hospital, so she headed to a gas station and asked someone there to call 911, read the document.
A review of surveillance video from a local business, cited in the charging document, showed that Jayla did not black out or pass out, as she claimed. An office noted in the aggravated assault document that “the video does show that the Defendant was the aggressor, lunges at and contacts Complainant Foreman, causing him to fall to the concrete striking his head.”
Keylan’s injuries included brain bleeding and a skull fracture, according to the charging documents.
Jayla admitted in a written statement that she had stabbed her boyfriend with a screwdriver after an argument, according to the police press release.
She was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail. She was charged with murder and her bond was set at $150,000. She was also charged with aggravated assault and her bond was set at $100,000.
Jayla is scheduled to appear in court next on Feb. 4, during which Jayla will enter a plea, a spokesperson from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office told Oxygen. A public defender for Jayla did not immediately return a request for comment from Oxygen.
