Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Courtenay Genette Thomas, 39, was arrested yesterday morning on warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and use of counterfeit bills.

On October 19, Thomas allegedly became angry during an argument with members of her household, brandished a gun, and pointed it at two people. Both victims told a Gainesville Police Department officer that they were afraid she would shoot them.

On June 6, a sworn complaint was filed against her for paying with a room at the Days Inn on SW 13th Street with six counterfeit $20 bills. The responding officer reported that the bills had the words “Copy Money” printed on them and all had the same serial number. The clerk said he was distracted on the phone when she paid and that he received an anonymous phone call an hour later from a woman who said that Thomas had paid with fake bills. The clerk said he called Thomas, who said she would “make it right,” but Thomas allegedly checked out of the hotel without paying for the room.

Another sworn complaint alleges that on May 15, she and Darnell Teate took a Samsung TV and some other items, valued over $750, from the Walmart at Butler Plaza and left through an emergency exit. Teate has since entered a plea in that case and is serving a 364-day sentence in the Alachua County Jail.

Thomas has eight felony convictions (none violent) and 29 misdemeanor convictions (none violent); all are property crimes. She has served one state prison sentence for trafficking in stolen items and was released in 2019. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $100,000 on the aggravated assault charges and $2,500 on the counterfeit bill charge; the theft charge has not yet been formally filed.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
