Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Janae Kenzly Hodge, 22, was arrested last night after allegedly colliding with a scooter, leading to severe injuries for the victim, and then telling first responders that she was not involved in the crash.

At about 9:55 p.m. on December 3, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the 2300 block of SW 2nd Avenue, where a scooter had collided with a car, with the scooter driver suffering a fracture to her spine and injuries to her ribs and face.

The arresting officer reported that Hodge called 911 and told the call-taker, “I was turning and there was a scooter. I think she clipped me as I was turning at the same time.” Hodge also reportedly spoke to a responding firefighter and said she heard a loud “boom,” looked over, and saw the scooter; she said the scooter did not hit her car and she was not involved. Hodge allegedly left the scene of the accident without providing any contact information to the victim or letting law enforcement know she was leaving.

The officer reported that he spoke to Hodge by phone, and she said she was not involved in the accident and that she heard the scooter hit, but she checked her vehicle and saw no damage. She also reportedly said she checked the scooter and saw no damage.

The officer reported that Hodge’s vehicle had “extensive damage on the passenger side of her vehicle.” The officer checked traffic cameras and verified that there was no damage to her vehicle on November 11, November 19, November 28, or December 2.

Post Miranda, Hodge reportedly said she knew the scooter hit her vehicle and that her car was damaged as a result of the accident. She reportedly admitted telling a firefighter that she was not involved in the accident. She reportedly said was aware of how severely the victim was injured and thought she would be in trouble because the victim was transported by ambulance.

Court documents indicate that Hodge is a UF student. She has no criminal history, and Judge Meshon Rawls ordered her released on her own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
