Woman Prison-Bound After Fatally Stabbing Boyfriend, Asking Child to Lie

An Alabama woman has admitted killing her boyfriend while his children were inside their apartment, abandoning her self-defense claim after a 911 call appeared to contradict her account.

Jennifer Nicole Heathcoe, 34, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to intentional murder in the death of 33-year-old Taylor Rawlins. Heathcoe had initially faced a capital murder charge and was scheduled to stand trial this week.

Heathcoe fatally stabbed Rawlins in the chest on Aug. 22, 2024, at the Charleston Apartments in Mobile, Alabama.

She first pleaded not guilty. After her arrest, her attorney described the couple’s relationship as “tumultuous” and “violent,” saying Heathcoe believed she had no choice but to use a knife to protect herself.

Her father, Donald Cain, likewise maintained that the stabbing was self-defense.

“Every time I saw her for the last couple of times she was with him for about a year, it’s just gone bad for her,” Cain told local CBS affiliate WKRG reported.

That account began to unravel after investigators reviewed the 911 calls.

Rawlins’ 9-year-old daughter called 911 from her bedroom in an apparent attempt to get help for her father. According to transcript details reported by local Fox affiliate WALA, the girl initially identified Heathcoe, her stepmother, as the person who stabbed him.

“My stepmom stabbed my dad,” the girl reportedly said. “Please come quick! My daddy is gonna die.”

A short time later, Heathcoe could allegedly be heard on the call urging the girl to blame someone else for the stabbing.

District Attorney Keith Blackwood told WALA that Heathcoe appeared to be “telling the child that’s calling to say that it wasn’t her” in an effort to “minimize [Heathcoe’s] involvement in this murder case.” He said the conduct could suggest “consciousness of guilt,” rather than support for a lawful self-defense claim.

Heathcoe also contacted 911 that night, telling dispatchers that a “dispute” had occurred before Rawlins was stabbed.

“Yes, there was just this uh, a dispute and … I got you baby. I got you. Breathe for me,” Heathcoe allegedly said as Rawlins was dying. She then suggested that someone else had attacked him.

“They ran out immediately,” she said.

Rawlins’ obituary described him as a devoted father whose “boundless love and devotion” centered on his two children. It also remembered his “deep connection to his mother,” his vibrant personality, sharp humor and warm laughter, which “brought comfort and joy to everyone around him.”

“In honor of his memory, we encourage others to engage in conversations about domestic violence awareness, understanding that every small action can contribute to a safer world for families and individuals alike,” the obituary said.
