The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the payment of N50,000 monthly stipends to 10,000 indigenous youths under its Youth Internship Scheme.

The Director of Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama, confirmed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, stating that the beneficiaries would undergo 12 months of hands-on training across various organizations to develop essential skills.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the scheme was inaugurated on July 31, 2024, during which Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the Federal Government’s approval of the stipend for the trainees. Thompson-Wakama noted that the commission had successfully completed the selection process and had begun placing trainees in organizations for practical experience.

“With these phases completed, the monthly stipend payments have also commenced,” she announced.

She revealed that the 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently chosen from over 3.2 million applicants, highlighting the strong interest of Niger Delta youths in self-development.

This overwhelming response reflects the immense potential and aspirations of our youths. The NDDC remains committed to ensuring that this life-changing opportunity reaches the most deserving candidates, creating a lasting impact and paving the way for a brighter future,” she stated.

Thompson-Wakama added that the scheme had helped the commission gather essential data on the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of youths in the region. This information, she explained, would help tailor future programs to address their specific challenges.

She also disclosed that the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to strengthen its corporate governance framework.

“KPMG has developed a Governance Advisory Report, which will guide the commission’s transition from a transaction-based to a transformation-focused policy,” she added.

The director praised the youths for their patience and cooperation during the selection process.
