Netflix’s highly anticipated sequel to the hit sitcom A Different World premiered on September 24.
The cast of Netflix’s A Different World gathered on the Atlanta red carpet on September 21 to celebrate the series’ return.
Original stars such as Jasmine Guy and Darryl M. Bell were joined by newcomers Maleah Joi Moon and Alijah Kai, along with director and producer Debbie Allen. The group marked the September 24 debut of the 10-episode series, which centers on a new generation of students at Hillman College.
The star-studded premiere honored both the show and the culture of historically Black colleges and universities at Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. Although Hillman is fictional, A Different World was filmed entirely in Atlanta, with scenes shot at Morehouse, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College.
The stars brought plenty of style to Monday’s premiere. Guy, who reprises her role as Whitley Gilbert, wore a sleek black turtleneck featuring a keyhole neckline. She posed alongside Moon, who plays Whitley’s onscreen daughter and new Hillman student, Deborah Wayne. Moon stood out in an elegant red spaghetti-strap dress with a thigh-high slit.
Chibuikem Uche, who portrays Kojo Achebe, chose an embellished black military-inspired jacket. Kai wore a long-sleeved black minidress with a plunging collared neckline, completing the look with a vivid red bow in her hair.
During a red carpet interview with Black Tree TV, Moon discussed the responsibility the new A Different World cast feels as it continues the original series’ legacy.
“It’s only right that we carry forward that torch and continue … the legacy of talking about stigmatized topics and bringing awareness to conversations that need to be had,” she said. “That is something that had to happen at this show, so I’m just so glad that I got to be a part of it.”
A Different World is now streaming on Netflix.
