John Seeks Solace in a Hotel After Intense Argument With Carolyn

While Carolyn clears away the remnants of a dinner party—which John had organized for what he termed “her friends”—tensions escalate between the couple. Carolyn disputes this label, asserting these are indeed “our friends,” leading to a fierce argument.

During the heated exchange, John remarks that it’s fortunate Carolyn never met his mother, suggesting she would not have supported their relationship. Carolyn, on the other hand, accuses John of only engaging with her minimally to maintain harmony, adding, “It must be hard for you to see how miserable I am.”

The confrontation spirals into a painful dialogue where Carolyn accuses John of failing to accommodate her needs, while John counters by saying she lacks an identity beyond her perceived victimhood. The argument culminates with John announcing his intention to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, expressing his frustration at constantly witnessing his failure in their marriage through her eyes.

Despite Carolyn’s pleas for him to stay, John reassures her that he will return.

If this is, in fact, the notorious check-in to the Stanhope two days before their plane crashed on the night of July 16, 1999, then Love Story leaped almost two years into the future. While their final weeks were fraught, they also traveled, went to parties and experienced at least some happiness as a couple during their nearly three years of marriage.

But, as Beller wrote, stories about them being on the rocks or otherwise unhappy sold more papers, as did photos of Carolyn looking upset, and that cycle continued for the rest of their lives.
