The third episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “The Squire,” offers a rich tapestry of Westerosi life, complete with raucous songs, thrilling tournament scenes, and the significant revelation that Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell, is a Targaryen prince. However, what might linger in the minds of many viewers is not the political intrigue or the action, but rather a simple, mouthwatering breakfast sandwich.
This latest chapter in the HBO saga provides a glimpse into the everyday routines of Westeros. Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, ventures into the camp market to procure goose eggs. He then crafts a “proper Westerosi breakfast bap” for himself and Egg. This charming moment not only captures the essence of George R.R. Martin’s vivid culinary descriptions but also stirs a longing among fans for a delectable egg sandwich to start the day.
The appeal of Dunk’s goose egg and bacon sandwiches extends beyond the screen; they were reportedly as appetizing as they appeared. During a visit to DECIDER HQ last October, the stars of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shared their experiences, revealing some behind-the-scenes culinary secrets.
“He didn’t have lunch,” Dexter Sol Ansell recounted, referring to his co-star, Peter Claffey. “He had that for lunch.”
Claffey chimed in, recalling the moment. “Oh, yeah,” he said with a grin. Turning to Ansell, he added, “Did you try any of the food we prepared? Remember, we were actually cooking. They advised us not to eat any of it. But I couldn’t resist—I dipped the bread into the egg and ate it. The whole crew was like, ‘You are disgusting.’”
“That was nice, though!” Ansell said, confirming he also ate their campfire cooking.
“Yeah, that was really nice food!” Claffey said. “It was like a proper Westerosi breakfast bap towards the end. And it was lovely. “
(A breakfast bap is, of course, Irish and British slang for a breakfast sandwich.)
Fingers crossed that Dunk’s goose egg bap makes it onto a NYC bodega menu somewhere near me sometime soon.
