The ship has sailed for Doctor Odyssey fans hoping to see a second season.

On Friday, Variety reported that the Ryan Murphy-produced series would not be returning for a Season 2, a full month and a half after the show ended its first season and only season. The show has been in limbo since mid-April with the Joshua Jackson-led drama noticeably being left off the fall 2025 ABC lineup.

The series followed Jackson’s character, Dr. Max Bankman, as a new physician working on a luxury cruise ship where guests are constantly in need of medical treatment, ranging from emergency operations to plastic surgery fixes.

For the small but committed fan base, hopes that the show — which also starred Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale — would return have been circulating online in the weeks post finale. Even before the show wrapped, rumors swirled that Murphy and the other producers were working to turn the Season 1 finale into a finale that could work as a series end amid the uncertainty over the show’s fate.

At one point prior to the cancellation, however, Disney TV Studios President Eric Schrier told Deadline that the medical procedural was in the hands of Murphy, who is producing a slate of other shows with ABC and across the Disney family in the coming months.

“I really love Doctor Odyssey, I think it’s a wildly inventive show, and we’re doing everything we can to support it,” Schrier said. “That decision ultimately lies with Ryan Murphy, whether Ryan wants to continue to do it, and he feels like there’s stories to tell that he feels confident in.”

On top of Murphy’s incredibly popular 9-1-1, soon to expand with 9-1-1: Nashville in the fall, the Glee creator is working with Hulu on All’s Fair, which stars Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash-Betts,  Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts, and Teyana Taylor. That series — which follows a team of female divorce attorneys who open their own high-powered law firm — will debut on the streamer in the fall.

As for Doctor Odyssey, cast members, including Jackson, Soo, Teale, and Johnson, have yet to comment on the show’s cancellation.
