Adam Sandler seems open to stepping back into the world of summer antics once again. During a recent appearance at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, the beloved actor and comedian shared some insights into the much-discussed possibility of Grown Ups 3 becoming a reality.
Back in 2010, Sandler teamed up with Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider to bring us Grown Ups, a comedy that revolves around five childhood pals reuniting for a memorable Fourth of July weekend. The film, buoyed by its star-studded ensemble including Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph, was a hit, pulling in over $270 million globally. Its success paved the way for Grown Ups 2 in 2013, which also fared well at the box office with earnings surpassing $200 million.
Fast forward more than a decade, and fans are eagerly speculating whether the original cast might reunite for a third installment. A report from MovieWeb has sparked excitement, suggesting that production might kick off in Vancouver come February. However, Sandler, while hopeful, remained cautious about confirming any concrete plans.
“You know what? I don’t know what’s going to happen … if we’re just trying to do a lot of stuff,” Sandler remarked to Us Weekly at the AFI Fest premiere of his latest project, Jay Kelly. “I would love it. We’d love it. Everybody’s working on stuff. To be with those guys would be incredible. I had the best time making both those movies, but we don’t know what the hell is happening quite yet.”
Adding to the speculation, Kevin James, Sandler’s co-star, also hinted at the possibility during an interview with The Direct in July. “I think there have been [conversations]. And I think, yeah, I think you can keep hope alive,” James shared. “I would keep a lot of hope alive. And I think it’s happening — something’s happening. I can say that.”
While Grown Ups 3 remains up in the air, Sandler’s got plenty on his plate. The comedian hit the AFI Fest red carpet alongside his wife Jackie Sandler and Jay Kelly costar George Clooney. Directed by Noah Baumbach, the film follows a famous actor (Clooney) and his longtime manager (Sandler) as they reflect on fame, friendship, and legacy.
“I lucked into this,” Sandler told Us. “Noah called me a year before I got the script. He said he’s had an idea, and he’s going to write it, and I’m in it. And then I got to read the script, get affected by it emotionally and say, thanks for doing all the work, and now I got to make sure I don’t let you down.”
Sandler added that playing a talent manager gave him a deeper appreciation for the team that’s supported him over the years. “Well, the most important line, to me, in the movie, I say to George’s character, ‘Jay, you’re Jay Kelly, but I’m Jay Kelly, too,’” he explained. “It’s like, what I’m going after, they’re helping me go after… and give ideas to help me do the best I can do.”
And if that weren’t enough, Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 hit Netflix in July — nearly 30 years after the original. “When I walk down the street a lotta times people will say, ‘You ever gonna do Happy Gilmore 2?’” he said on Good Morning America. “And for 28 years, I was like, ‘What are you talking about? No.’ And then all of a sudden, I was like, ‘Maybe.’”
The comedy sequel features surprise appearances from Eminem, Bad Bunny, and Travis Kelce. “We wrote ’em stuff, everybody was kind enough to come,” Sandler said. “And everybody in it did a great job. Every day, someone cool would show up and we’d hang out.”
Jay Kelly opens in select theaters on November 14 before streaming globally on Netflix December 5.
