For more than a century, the Sherman family in Montgomery County, Texas, only welcomed boys into the world. Now, history is about to change as they break the 108-year streak of boys with a baby girl on the way. 

Firefighter Michael Sherman Jr. and his wife, Joacquia, recently gathered with loved ones for a gender reveal that had everyone on their feet. When the big moment confirmed the couple is expecting a girl, the celebration turned emotional.

“I just feel honored that finally, we are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world – finally, after over 100 years. It’s amazing,” Michael Jr. said.

The last time a girl was born into the Sherman family was in 1917. So they know the “only boys” pattern all too well.

“It’s like a monumental thing. I have three boys. My dad had two boys. His brother had two boys. So, it’s never been nothing but boys, boys, boys,” explained Michael Sherman Sr., the soon-to-be grandfather.

According to family history, the last daughter born into the Sherman name was Orah Belle Sherman. She went on to leave her own mark, remembered as a trailblazer in Atlanta during the civil rights movement. “She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta,” great-grandmother Lydia Robertson proudly shared.

The new baby girl is expected to arrive in March, joining her big brother Mekhai, 5. The family says she will grow up knowing how special her place is in their legacy.

“She’s going to know that she made history in the Sherman family,” grandmother Chantene Newman said.

For Robertson, the hope is simple but profound, “I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her… She’s going to always have support here for us, and I pray she makes the right decisions in life and takes the right path.”

The Shermans are even curious if their 108-year run of boys might qualify for a Guinness World Record. Whether or not that pans out, one thing is certain, this little girl is already the family’s biggest blessing.
