Following Ali Wong’s divorce, Bill Hader’s relentless pursuit of romance raised eyebrows among her friends, who humorously speculated that his efforts might be signs of an “undiagnosed mental condition.”
Bill Hader seems to be navigating a challenging period. Last month, he was reportedly involved in a verbal altercation with Nick Reiner shortly before Reiner’s alleged involvement in his parents’ deaths. Now, it appears Hader’s long-standing relationship has reached its end. Hader and Ali Wong, who had been together for a couple of years, parted ways in January 2026. Although their relationship seemed smooth, Wong revealed that Hader’s early romantic gestures were so intense that her male friends jokingly questioned his mental state.
Ali Wong once said her friends wondered if Bill Hader had an undiagnosed mental illness
After two years together, Bill Hader and Ali Wong have gone their separate ways. Wong shared that Hader was enamored with her from the outset. The Barry actor was so captivated that he reached out to Wong following her divorce, proposing they become a couple. Despite Wong’s initial reluctance, Hader’s determination never wavered. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Wong recounted how Hader sent flowers to every hotel she stayed at during her comedy tour, showcasing his unwavering affection.
Wong recalled the romantic gesture with nostalgia. She even said it made her female friends swoon. Her male friends didn’t think it was so lovely, though. Wong remembered her male friends saying that Hader must be a “psychopath” based on his tactics. Wong joked that other men have become “so lazy” that they assume another man doing something nice for a woman he is interested in must have an “undiagnosed mental illness.”
As it turns out, Hader was not a “psychopath” nor does he appear to have an “undiagnosed mental illness.” The relationship did not end because of cheating, a major falling out, or even an odd habit.
While Ali Wong’s friends were not initially sure of Bill Hader, clearly things quieted down once the actor proved himself. Wong certainly liked him enough to continue seeing him. The couple spent two years together, though there had been murmurs of trouble a few months ago. Why exactly did they break up, though?
Busy schedules and additional obligations forced the couple to end the romantic relationship. According to an insider who spoke with People, Hader’s filming schedule and Wong’s comedy tour made it impossible for them to find time to see each other. They opted to end the romance and remain friends so they could focus on their jobs and their family commitments. Wong and Hader both had very busy 2025s, and that doesn’t look like it will slow down anytime soon. They also have children to factor in.
Hader is the father of three; he coparents with his ex-wife, Maggie Carey. Wong shares joint custody of her two daughters, Mari and Nikki, with her ex-husband, Justin Hakuta. Hader and Carey split up in 2017. Wong and Hakuta filed for divorce in 2022.
