A contestant from the brutal SBS survival competition series Alone Australia has opened up about her shock weight gain.

Bushcraft teacher Gina, 52, revealed on Wednesday’s two-part premiere that she gained a whopping 19kg before filming the series to ensure that she had enough body fat to sustain her in the Tasmanian wilderness.

At one point, she joked that she could barely stand up properly because she was carrying so much extra weight.

‘I need to get to work,’ she said, before grunting as she tried to get up from a log she was sitting on.

‘I’m so fat I can’t stand up. I have to rock,’ she laughed. ‘Oh my god, that’s embarrassing!’

The self-proclaimed nomad then revealed she’d intentionally stacked on the kilos to sustain herself in the wild.

‘That fat is going to be my survival strategy,’ she explained.

‘In a survival situation, fat becomes the most important nutritional component,’ Gina continued.

‘Without fat, you can have as much protein and greens as you need and you will still starve.’

Further explaining her strategy for the game, Gina said she was going to expend most of her calories building her shelter, and would then focus on resting and maintaining her strength. ‘I have enough food on my body that I don’t have to worry about starving any time soon,’ she explained.

Gina isn’t the only contestant tipping the scales this season.

Michael Atkinson, known as Outback Mike on his YouTube channel where he videos his travel expeditions, ate over 10,000 calories a day and gained 19kg in preparation for the show.

In order to boost his chance of being able to stay in the Tasmanian outback for as long as possible, Mike decided to put on as much weight as possible.

‘Initially, I just ate a lot of fatty foods, but my weight gain plateaued at five kilograms above normal, so I went to a sports dietitian,’ he told GQ Australia.

‘She prescribed 10,270 calories a day. This diet was horrible to live through!

‘I felt close to throwing up several times a day and my stomach was always stretched to the limit.’

After gaining almost 20kg and feeling sick from eating so much, Mike said he was ready to take on the starvation the wilderness would bring.

Alone Australia, which airs on SBS on March 29, has been billed as one of the most authentic reality series on the small screen.

With no producers on the show, contestants film themselves and are given no direction.

Participants on the show fight to stay in the wilderness as long as possible to win a grand prize of $250,000.
