The hosts of The View continued their spirited discussion on President Donald Trump’s recent decision to apprehend Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a late-night operation over the weekend.
While the panelists unanimously labeled Maduro as an “illegitimate president” of Venezuela, they expressed concerns about the ethical implications of Trump’s directive to detain him and his wife. The couple was taken from their palace in Venezuela to New York, where they face charges of narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Both have entered not guilty pleas.
“I don’t get it. Maybe I’m not up to speed on all this because, you know, I have a life,” joked Joy Behar. “Sure, Maduro is a bad guy. We removed him. But what about Kim Jung Un, Putin, or the leader in Hungary? Are we planning to invade all these countries and kidnap their leaders too?”
Sunny Hostin chimed in, highlighting the core concern with Trump’s actions.
“Yes, we all agree Maduro was an illegitimate leader who caused great harm and corruption in Venezuela,” Hostin stated. “But how he was removed is significant. We are supposed to be a nation governed by laws, and the method we used violates international criminal law and United Nations protocols. We simply can’t do that.”
However, Alyssa Farah Griffin noted that the United States has been carrying out similar operations for decades, with George W. Bush capturing Saddam Hussein in 2003 and Barack Obama capturing Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
“It doesn’t make it right!” Hostin snapped, to which Griffin replied, “I know, but let’s just be consistent with other administrations that, under just as tenuous of authority, have taken out — we all agree that without a good plan in place, it goes disastrously. I am not pro-nation building. That’s what the oppositions leaders do.”
Before Griffin could finish her point, Hostin sharply chimed in, “But you can’t go into another country and kidnap its leader.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
