Amani Jlassi and Matt Wattles are making waves in the 90 Day Fiancé universe. 

The San Diego couple are part of the show’s first-ever throuple, along with their partner Any. But the TLC show isn’t their first experience with reality TV. The pair also appeared on a Netflix show about people struggling with their personal finances, and their episodes offer some insight into their relationship dynamic. 

Amani and Matt appeared on Netflix’s ‘How to Get Rich’ 

In 2023, Amani and Matt were featured on How to Get Rich. The eight-episode series hosted by financial guru Ramit Sethi profiled people from across the United States who were struggling with money and needed help reaching their financial goals. 

The future 90 Day Fiancé stars turned to Sethi because they couldn’t get on the same page regarding their finances. Amani earned a five-figure monthly salary thanks to a successful career in the software industry. Matt had trained as an electrical engineer but quit work to raise their two young children. 

Amani, who admitted she didn’t trust Matt with money, made all the financial decisions for the pair. That left her husband feeling insecure and frustrated. To make things more complicated, they weren’t always able to cover all their expenses, despite Amani’s high salary. She earned a lot and spent a lot, while Matt wanted to save more for a rainy day. The ongoing conflict about finances and bills was damaging their marriage, and any attempt to talk about the issue was “emotionally draining,” Amani said. 

“I rely on my wife, so that’s an instability … I can’t maintain the lifestyle that she’s put us in,” Matt confessed to Sethi at one point. 

Sethi suggested that Matt look into returning to work so that he could feel more independent. He also advised Amani to work with Matt to manage their finances as a couple rather than trying to do everything herself. They didn’t solve all their problems on the show, but they did seem to walk away from the experience with a better idea of what they needed to change and what their priorities were. 

“I always put money as the most important thing in life. And it’s not. It should be family,” Amani said. 

“I’ve seen my wife be more patient financially and be more compassionate emotionally,” Matt said. 

Amani said people got the wrong idea about her from ‘How to Get Rich’ 

Amani wasn’t totally happy with her appearance on How to Get Rich, or with viewer reactions to her behavior. In a video posted on Instagram in 2024, she said brief scenes, including one where she and Matt argued over his lack of access to the couple’s bank accounts, were the result of hours of exhausting filming and didn’t show her in the best light. 

“I could have been more calm … In hindsight, I admit that I could have behaved better. I acted very emotional,” she said.

In a February 2024 Instagram post, she said that “being portrayed in a certain light on reality TV” inspired her to reclaim her narrative and focus on her personal brand. Now, she’s stepping back into the spotlight with another reality TV appearance that’s sure to generate controversy. Commenters on Instagram called her, Matt, and Any’s storyline “cringy” and “toxic,” with several arguing they were better suited to another TLC series, Seeking Sister Wife.

“I think we can all see where this is going,” one wrote. “This isn’t going to end well.”

90 Day Fiancé Season 11 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on TLC. Episodes also stream on Max.
