This article contains spoilersfor Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece live-action series.

Netflix’s live-action One Piece series was a huge success and nailed most of the East Blue Saga. However, as the series moves into Season 2, certain scenes may be difficult to adapt without sparking some level of controversy amongst first-time viewers and long-time anime fans. The second season will cover the Loguetown Arc and a good portion of the Arabasta Saga, so there will be a lot of new characters, fights, and Devil Fruits.

Many of these potentially controversial scenes will involve the use of digital effects, but a few scenes could also be problematic because they have not aged well since they first debuted more than 20 years ago. A few live-action One Piece scenes could cause controversy if changes are made to the source material in any way.

Chopper’s First Appearance Will Likely Have Mixed Opinions

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 3, Episode 7, “The Blue-Nosed Reindeer! Chopper’s Secret”

Tony Tony Chopper will join the Straw Hat Pirates as their doctor in Season 2 of the One Piece live-action series, and his debut will garner a lot of attention online because his appearance will likely not sit well with many fans. Chopper is a reindeer who ate the Human-Human Fruit, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit which grants him human-level intelligence and various human-like hybrid forms.

Chopper will be a fully CGI character, which comes with its own set of issues because he may not blend in well with the practical sets, and there is a high chance he will look more like a cartoon character rather that a living, breathing person. Given how expensive this will be, there is a risk Chopper’s visual effects will not be up to par. Chopper’s voice could also be an issue, especially if the actress who voices him in the anime is not cast. Chopper is one of One Piece‘s mascots, so Netflix needs to get him right.

Animal Lovers May Not Like Luffy & Sanji Trying to Eat Chopper

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 3, Episode 7, “The Blue-Nosed Reindeer! Chopper’s Secret”

Luffy will eat any type of meat, and there is a running joke within One Piece that revolves around him potentially eating Chopper. This first comes up on Drum Island when Luffy wakes up from a daze and attempts to eat Chopper out of hunger. Sanji also wakes up and attempts to cook Chopper. This is the first time the trio interact with each other, and it is a genuinely funny moment in the anime.

Chopper is the cute mascot character of the One Piece series, yet despite his small punitive stature, he makes a big impact within several episodes.

Unfortunately, animal lovers in 2025 may vilify the scene, given the fact that a cute animal is being exploited for a laugh. There is a pretty good chance the One Piece live-action series will scrap the scene altogether and opt for a more animal-friendly interaction, but that would take away some of One Piece‘s charm. The scene also proves Chopper is no pushover since he fights Luffy and Sanji off, so it would do him a bit of a disservice.

Vivi’s Perfume Dance Could Be Criticized for Oversexualization

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 2, Episode 4, “Exploding Santoryu! Zoro vs. Baroque Works!”

Nefertari Vivi is the Princess of Arabasta, making her one of One Piece‘s most influential female characters, and she will be played by Charithra Chandran. When the Straw Hats first encounter her, she is working for Baroque Works under the codename, Miss Wednesday. After the events of Whiskey Peak, she joins the Straw Hats, who agree to help save her homeland.

While pretending to be a villain, Vivi fights Zoro one-on-one in Whiskey Peak and attempts to seduce him with her Perfume Dance. She sprays fragrance into the air while moving in a seductive way. This scene might be removed because it is more for comedic effect, but if it is kept in the show, it will probably be criticized for oversexualizing a young actress to appeal to a primarily male audience. Ironically, some men might dislike the scene, too, since the dance causes Zoro to fall to his knees.

7

The Fight Between Luffy & Zoro Might Be Viewed as Unnecessary

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 2, Episode 5, “A Serious Fight! Luffy vs. Zoro: The Baffling Duel!”

Zoro is Luffy’s right hand and most trusted crew member, and he has stepped up multiple times as the crew’s first mate. Having said that, he and Luffy will fight each other in Whiskey Peak if the arc is adapted properly. The issue is that this scene will likely be viewed as unnecessary filler, given the fact the entire fight is the result of a misunderstanding. It does not help that Zoro goes along with it just to prove a point, which can be misconstrued as a toxic ego.

Fan-favorite Roronoa Zoro is one of the best characters in One Piece, and fans love the witty, tough, and enduring dialogue he spouts off.

Luffy instigated the fight because he believed Zoro was attacking the citizens of Whiskey Peak for no reason after they treated the crew well. They were all actually members of Baroque Works. This scene makes Luffy look like a fool who cannot trust his crew or discern danger, which works in anime, but it is off-putting in live-action because it will hinder his character development. Luffy was devastated when Zoro sustained a near-fatal injury after losing to Mihawk, so it would be hard to believe he would just attack Zoro without speaking to him first.

The Wapol House Technique Might Not Translate Into Live-Action Well

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 3, Episode 10, “Fight Wapol’s Crew! The Power of the Munch Munch Fruit!”

Wapol uses the Munch-Munch Fruit to eat one of his crewmates in One Piece.

Wapol will be the main villain on Drum Island, and many One Piece fans would agree he is one of the worst pre-timeskip villains. He is the reason Chopper’s father-figure died and his actions nearly destroyed Drum Island. Wapol ate the Munch-Munch Fruit, which gives him the power to eat virtually any living or non-living thing. He can then manifest whatever he eats on his body.

Wapol should use his Wapol House Technique during his live-action fight with Luffy. Like its name suggests, Wapol will assume the features of a house, but he will have canon arms as well. This form was executed perfectly in the anime, but a live-action adaptation will require a lot of CGI, which might look unnatural and jarring on screen. The only way this technique will translate well is if it combines CGI and practical effects, but even then, it might look silly to some viewers.

Sanji Flirting With Multiple Women in Whiskey Peak Could Be Problematic

Sanji goes on to become one of the strongest Yonko Commanders in One Piece because of his modified body, Haki, and powerful kicks. He is known for his Black Leg Style and culinary skills, but he is also known for his flirtatious nature. Sanji flirts with virtually every woman he sees, and if he gets the chance, he will spy on women while they are bathing. As one would expect, this type flirtatiousness has not aged well in 2025.

During the Whiskey Peak Arc, Sanji flirts with multiple women at the same time during a party like a drunken buffoon. Taz Skyler would do a great job with this flirting scene, but modern audiences would not appreciate Sanji’s actions toward the women. Live-action Sanji still flirts with women, but his flirtatious nature has been dialed back significantly. Season 2 might skip this scene altogether, but if it is included, some viewers might be offended if it is not done tastefully.

Miss Goldenweek’s Power Might Be Changed for the Netflix Series

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 2, Episode 14, “Luffy Attacked By Magic! Colors Trap”

Miss Goldenweek is one of Baroque Works’ top female officer agents and will be one of the villains featured on Little Garden. She may not look like much of a threat, but she almost defeated Luffy with her unique ability. Miss Goldenweek does not have a Devil Fruit, but she is a highly skilled painter who can employ a form of hypnosis with her colored paints. For example, black causes someone to betray their friends, while yellow forces the target to laugh uncontrollably.

This is the type of silly power that works in anime because of its absurd nature, but live-action viewers would view advanced paint-based hypnosis as a joke, especially if Luffy’s over-the-top reactions are included. Fortunately, One Piece has Devil Fruits, so Season 2 could make a slight change by making Miss Goldenweek’s hypnosis the byproduct of a Devil Fruit power instead. If such a change were made, a few anime purists will not be pleased.

Dragon Saving Luffy Might Include Some Unexpected Changes

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 1, Episode 52, “Buggy’s Revenge! The Man Who Smiles at the Execution Platform!”

Monkey D. Dragon rescues Luffy from Captain Smoker In Loguetown in One Piece.

Monkey D. Dragon is the supreme commander of the Revolutionary Army, but more importantly, he is Luffy’s father. He will be played by actor Rigo Sanchez. The Straw Hats will visit Loguetown before entering the Grand Line and Luffy will be overwhelmed by Smoker, the Marine Captain who oversees the Loguetown. Dragon unexpectedly saves Luffy from Smoker’s finishing blow and disappears.

This sequence of events may not sit well with first-time viewers because it can be viewed as extreme plot armor, so the live-action showrunners might have to reveal Dragon’s connection to Luffy for it to make sense. Even then, it could still be seen as a huge plot contrivance. Such a change would not sit well with anime and manga purists, though, because the Dragon reveal is supposed to occur at the end of the Water 7 Saga. In either scenario, viewers will be left questioning why Garp did not mention Dragon to Luffy in the first season.

Nico Robin’s Debut Might Not Be as Iconic as It Was in the Anime & Manga

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 2, Episode 6, “Deliver Princess Vivi! Luffy Pirates Depart”

Nico Robin becomes the archeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates following the events of the Arabasta Saga, but when they first encounter each other, she will be known as Miss All Sunday, the top female officer agent of Baroque Works. Nico Robin will be portrayed by Lera Abova, who already got targeted for her casting online because of her real-life ethnicity. Unfortunately, this means some viewers will dislike her debut no matter what.

Robin ate the Flower-Flower Fruit, which allows her to sprout limbs on other surfaces, and she will use it during her debut, but considering the CGI component, it might end up looking very weird or out of place. This scene makes Robin look like a menacing villainess with a playful side, and Lera will need to nail the performance in order to please One Piece fans

The Duel Between Dorry & Brogy Will Have Detractors Because of the Visual Effects

Scene Occurs in One Piece Anime, Season 2, Episode 10, “Humongous Battle! The Giants Dorry and Brogy!”

The Little Garden Arc will introduce viewers to Dorry and Brogy, who happen to be two of the strongest giants in One Piece. Dorry will be played by Werner Coetser while Brendan Murray will play Brogy. When the Straw Hats meet them, viewers will learn that Dorry and Brogy have been fighting to the death for 100 years. Ironically, they are still each other’s best friend.

Dorry and Brogy’s clash is one of the most iconic moments of the Arabasta Saga, but it might not have the same effect in live-action. Giants are huge, which means the One Piece live-action will require some special camera work and CGI to capture the fight perfectly. The island literally shakes and trees almost snap from the force of their strikes. Their movements were fluid in the anime because there were no limitations, but in live-action, their immense size might cause their exchange to look slow and clunky.

The poster for One Piece depicts Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, Nico Robin, Brook, Nami, Tony Tony Chopper, Franky and Jinbei in their Egghead Island outfits as they look at Egghead Island.
