An update has been revealed on Blade Runner 2099.

Per Deadline, Blade Runner 2099 is getting back on track with its production for a streaming release on Prime Video. The series was previously set for a Summer 2023 production in Belfast before it was frozen due to the Writers Guild of America strike. It’s now set to begin production in April, but this comes with a change in directors. Jonathan van Tulleken, who recently helmed the first two episodes of the critically acclaimed FX series Shōgun, is now set to executive produce and direct the first two episodes of Blade Runner 2099. Tulleken is replacing Jeremy Podeswa. Filming will also no longer take place in Belfast. The production is moving to set up its production in Prague, the Czech Republic.

How Blade Runner 2049’s Baseline Test Works

Thanks to the Voight-Kampff test from the original film, the baseline test in Blade Runner 2049 was possible to determine a serviceable replicant.

Blade Runner 2099 was first announced in early 2022. The limited series comes from Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions, with original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott serving as an executive producer. Silka Luisa is still attached as a writer and will also serve as showrunner. Luisa is executive producing alongside Scott; Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts of Alcon Entertainment; David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions; and Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, Tom Spezialy, and Richard Sharkey.

The Blade Runner Franchise Continues

Released in 1982, the original Blade Runner was based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. It is set in a dystopian future and follows a synthetic human known as a “replicant” (Rutger Hauer) who’s leading a group of fugitives while a cop (Harrison Ford) is in pursuit. The film was later given a sequel in 2017 from director Denis Villeneuve, which saw Harrison Ford returning as Rick Deckard, joined by names like Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, and Ana de Armas.

The series has also spawned a previous series for the small screen. A CG-animated series, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, was developed by Crunchyroll and Adult Swim with a single season airing between 2021 and 2022. It follows a female replicant voiced by Jessica Henwick in the English version, with other notable cast members like Brian Cox, Peyton List, and Henry Czerny.

Additionally, there have been other mediums that have further expanded the Blade Runner franchise. There have been several comic books and novels, as well as various video games dating back to the 1980s. Three official short films were also released in 2017.

Blade Runner 2099 doesn’t have a release date at this time.
