The two top-ranking works hail from franchises with major domestic followings. Notably, Nohara Hiroshi is a spin-off of Shin-Ei Animation’s iconic anime sitcom, Crayon Shin-chan. The series is a slice-of-life tale revolving around Shinnosuke’s father, Hiroshi, who works as a manager for a Japanese marketing firm. As the title suggests, the main focus of the series is Hiroshi’s daily lunch break, during which he indulges in many types of delicious food. The show garnered overwhelming praise on the day of its debut. Among the many comments left by users, one confidently proclaimed that Nohara Hiroshi is set to become the “dominating anime” of 2025.
3-Nen Z Gumi: Ginpachi-sensei is a spinoff of the hit Gintama franchise, created by manga artist Hideaki Sorachi in December 2003. The original series follows “freelance” samurai Gintoki Sakata, who inhabits a version of Edo-era Japan that has been taken over by aliens. As leader of the Yorozuya group, Gintoki and his associates earn a living by performing odd jobs and occasionally intervening in the war between aliens and mankind. The spinoff series, which marks the first new anime installment since the theatrical Gintama film from 2011, recasts Gintoki as a schoolteacher of a class filled with eccentric supporting characters from the main series. Japanese fans have rejoiced at the franchise’s return, praising the new series for its back-to-back punch lines and faithfulness to the classic “Gintama style.”
Japan’s top picks of Fall 2025 also include two Shonen Jump franchises with significant international followings. Seventh-place winner Spy x Family is based on the titular manga series by Tatsuya Endo, which has over 38 million copies in circulation worldwide. Written as an action-comedy, Spy x Family revolves around the daily lives of master spy Agent Twilight, an elite assassin named Yor, and five-year-old telepath (and wannabe spy) Anya. Initially released in 2016, eighth-place winner My Hero Academia is the hit anime adaptation of Kohei Horikoshi’s beloved manga series. MHA: The Final Season will bring Izuku Midoriya’s story to a close as he and Pro Heroes conclude the war against Tomura Shigaraki and the remaining forces of the Paranormal Liberation Front. The new season premiered on Oct. 4, 2025, in Japan.
For U.S. viewers, Style of Hiroshi Nohara’s Lunch is streaming on Plex. Gintama: Mr Gintachi’s Zany Class, Spy x Family and My Hero Academia are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
