A Dragon Ball Super fan has called out a potentially misleading translation in the manga’s latest chapter that footnotes Gohan’s role in Cell Max’s defeat.
Dragon Ball Super fans have reason to be more excited now that the manga has passed Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero‘s story arc. The manga faithfully adapted the 2022 film’s main story beats, which culminated in the defeat of Cell Max and the decimation of the Red Ribbon army. That final skirmish also involved fan-favorite Dragon Ball protagonists led by Piccolo and Gohan, who were the first to storm the Red Ribbon base in the movie. Chapter 101 of the Dragon Ball Super manga references this event, but one user on X (formerly Twitter) noticed its English translation’s shortcomings.

Dragon Ball Battle Hour Reveals New Daima Synopsis Ahead of Special Panel
The much-anticipated Dragon Ball Daima anime receives a new synopsis and teases more info ahead of the upcoming Battle Hour 2024 event.
User @SupaChronicles points out a potentially misleading translation on page 35 in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 101, where a panel depicts Whis bringing Beerus up to speed with Gohan’s true potential by revealing his involvement in Cell Max’s defeat. VIZ Media’s English translation reads: “It was Goku’s Boy Gohan, actually, along with Piccolo the Namekian [who defeated Cell Max]. They led the triumphant charge against the monster.” The translated text appears fairly accurate at the outset, but @SupaChronicles offers valid points on how this is also potentially misleading.
Confusing Wordplay in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 101
“…Another translation miss,” the user wrote on X. “Not a big one, but still maybe a kind of important one. Whis includes ‘everyone else’ in his statement, along with Gohan and Piccolo, but VIZ English misses out on ‘others’ and makes the dialogue seem like only Piccolo and Gohan worked out to defeat Cell Max when in reality, it was ALL OF THEIR COMBINED EFFORT.” Other users pitched in with comments that the translation was either serviceable or out of context. @SupaChronicles asserted that the Spanish translation of the panel is more accurate. One user also said that “the rest of the protagonists” were implied in the statement, given that Gohan and Piccolo led the assault.

Semantic translation has always been a prevalent concern in localized content, as demonstrated by a similar squabble between One Piece fans. The cut-and-dry guidelines can only do so much in translating nuances between languages, and the quality of the result often depends on the translator’s mastery of the language and its cultural context. Anime and manga fans serve as crowdsourced consultants in this regard — something that ultimately benefits the industry whether the translations are hashed out by consensus or heated debate.
