After much anticipation, the moment has finally arrived: Dragon Ball Super Season 2 is officially on its way. Eight years after the last episodes aired, Toei Animation has confirmed the adaptation of the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga” from the Dragon Ball Super manga, more commonly known as the “Moro Saga.”

The exciting news was unveiled during the “Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri” livestream. The new series, titled Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, is currently in production. While fans have enjoyed the entertaining sidetrack that was Dragon Ball DAIMA, those who follow only the anime will now have the chance to continue the epic narrative of Dragon Ball Super from where the Tournament of Power left off.

The first season of Dragon Ball Super wrapped up in 2018 after a successful 131-episode run. As the years passed, many fans feared that a second season might never materialize. Despite new movie releases like Broly and Super Hero, as well as ongoing manga chapters by Toyotarou and Akira Toriyama, there was little indication that the beloved TV anime would return. Now, this long-awaited comeback is set to reignite the excitement of fans worldwide.

Dragon Ball Super Season 1 concluded its 131-episode run in 2018, and as the years passed by, many fans grew to believe that there would never be a Season 2. While there continued to be new Dragon Ball Super movies with Broly and Super Hero, and Toyotarou and Akira Toriyama continued to release monthly chapters of the Dragon Ball Super manga, no signs were ever given that the television anime would be returning.

Now, it’s been confirmed that Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will be coming soon. This announcement was preceded by an absolutely jaw-dropping teaser trailer, one that recapped all of Dragon Ball history, and featured music composed by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will be adapting the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga of the Dragon Ball Super manga. This arc is hailed by many fans as the best in the entire series, with Toyotarou taking point on the writing, and crafting the modern Dragon Ball story that comes the closest to feeling like Dragon Ball Z. The upcoming anime will see Goku and Vegeta teaming up with the Galactic Patrol, most notably one enigmatic member named Merus, to combat the ancient evil of Moro, a sorcerer who has a score to settle with the former Grand Supreme Kai residing inside Majin Buu.

Officially, it has not been directly stated that Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is going to be a television anime. In the wake of the box office successes of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc, Toei could be incentivized to continue the Dragon Ball franchise as a series of movies. However, considering the length and structure of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, it’s highly unlikely that this is the case.

No official release date for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol has been given, as it’s been announced very early. The internal sense among the staff working on it, though, is that it will be done and ready for a late 2027 release.

Dragon Ball Fans Have Waited 8 Long Years For the Anime to Cover the Moro Arc

While the Dragon Ball Super manga has a sizable readership, the vast majority of Dragon Ball fans only experience the franchise through the anime. Ever since Ultra Instinct Goku and Jiren had their final showdown eight years ago, the only content these fans have been given has been the superb Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the entertaining enough Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and the heavily divisive swan song of Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball DAIMA.

In that same period of time, Toyotarou and Toriyama completed two manga-exclusive arcs of Dragon Ball Super, of which the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga is the first. Perhaps the most important thing anime-only fans need to know about this exceptional arc is its exact place in the timeline. The “Moro Arc” is not the first story to come directly after the Universal Survival Arc, with that actually being Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga comes next, and it’s followed by the Granolah the Survivor Saga, and then Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

When it aired, Dragon Ball Super was one of the biggest anime in the world, with both of Goku’s fights against Jiren, in particular, completely breaking the internet. If Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol can capture even a fraction of that hype, it’s guaranteed to become one of the biggest and most popular anime of the entire decade.
