Gundam Legend Tsukasa Kotobuki Tackles Viral Frieren Art Challenge

Kotobuki is famous for serving as the character designer for multiple Gundam anime, including Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantomand Mobile Suit Gundam: THE ORIGIN, the latter of which he also served as the lead animator. Kotobuki has also drawn several Gundam manga, and was the character designer for Saber Marionette J.

On Reddit, fans began drawing Frieren from the most difficult angle possible, depicting the Elvin mage from a low, upward perspective. As more and more artists began taking their own shots at this challenge, the trend naturally made its way to X, where it caught Kotobuki’s attention.

On November 18th, Kotobuki made a series of posts detailing his progress as he worked on the challenge until the final product was complete. This culminated in the character designer posting an animated GIF, depicting Frieren tilting her head up. “It was a half-assed sketch, so it’s all shaky, but it kinda moves and you can sorta make it out,” Kotobuki posted alongside the GIF, the text translated from Japanese.
