The Sims is getting a feature film adaptation.

Per THR, It’s been revealed that The Sims, one of the most popular video game franchises of all time, is getting reimagined as a feature film. The movie will be directed by Kate Herron, who helmed the first season of Loki to great acclaim. Herron is also set to co-write the screenplay with Briony Redman. Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, will produce the film adaptation following the immense success they had with Barbie. Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment will also produce, and The Sims publisher Electronic Arts will be involved both creatively and as a producing partner.

Barbie Director’s Narnia Reboot Gets Exciting Update

A major update has been revealed on Greta Gerwig’s next project after Barbie’s success.

The Sims movie is described as a hot package that is now getting shopped to studios and streamers, and it remains to be seen where it will ultimately land. As the project is still in its early development, there are no cast members or plot details have yet been revealed. As for how The Sims will translate into a feature film, time will tell, though perhaps it could be done in a clever way that acknowledges the tropes of the game. Certainly, the unorthodox approach to adapting Barbie turned out to be an excellent strategy, and it’s easy to speculate that Margot Robbie may find some influence from that film. Notably, The Sims simulates the lives of people in their fantasy homes, which could be described as a virtual doll house, similar to how children would typically play with Barbie dolls.

The Sims Is One of the Most Successful Video Game Franchises

The video game franchise began its life as SimCity before evolving into the much more popular spinoff, The Sims, which was first released in 2000. While the original SimCity games were about building entire cities, The Sims focused on the daily lives of the fictional city’s residents themselves, known as “Sims.” The franchise has since sold almost 200 million copies across the world to become one of the most lucrative video game properties ever made. After the original Sims became an instant hit, a variety of sequels, spinoffs, and expansion packs were made.

Every Resurrection Method In The Sims 4, Explained

There are many amusing ways for Sims to die, but there are fewer ways to reverse death. Here are all five ways to resurrect Sims in The Sims 4.

This is not the first time an attempt has been made. 20th Century Studios acquired the rights in 2007 with plans to make a movie based on The Sims, but the project wound up fizzling out in development hell before it could make any real traction. After saying on the backburner for years, it was later scrapped completely when Disney acquired the rights to 21st Century in 2019. Perhaps the recent success of other video game movies, such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has finally given The Sims the momentum it needs to get its own feature film adaptation.

A release date hasn’t yet been set for The Sims movie.
