Wistoria: Wand and Sword was one of the most underrated anime of 2024. From the creator of DanMachi, the series follows young Will Serfort, a teen with dreams of becoming a Magia Vander, one of the most powerful mages in the world. However, Will lacks any magical abilities, causing him to lag behind the other mages at his school, Regarden Magical Academy. Yet while the series focuses on Will, that doesn’t mean viewers don’t get to see the other mages on the show.

The first season of the Wistoria anime introduces viewers to some powerful mages, all with their own goals they’re aiming to achieve. While Will might not qualify because of his complete lack of magical talent, there’s no shortage of student and teacher mages that wield incredible powers. While things might change in future seasons, for now these mages are the best of the best.

Colette Loire Is From A Former Noble House

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

One of Will’s only friends at the start of Wistoria, it’s easy to underestimate Colette’s abilities. For most of the series, she’s in a support role, backing up her crush. Still, as students go she’s still incredibly talented, which is how she was allowed to go dungeon-diving with Will and five of the most powerful mages on the show.

Colette’s specialty is Earth magic, with her frequently developing defensive items to back up her comrades. During the Grand Magic Festival, her magic came in handy by generating gauntlets and a blade for Will, one that was durable enough to deal with Zion’s hottest flame spells. That said, she’s also capable of summoning Earth golems to defend her as well.

Wignall Wields The Incredible Power Of The Elves

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

Wignall is one of the top students at Rigarden Magic Academy. Technically, he ranks only behind Lihanna as far as being a student, with a near-perfect number of credits. As an elf, he’s naturally talented at using magic, though he is hiding a big secret.

Wignall is talented with both Wind and Illusion magic, which allows him to both attack and defend. What holds Wignall back through the majority of Wistoria: Wand and Sword season one, however, is he can’t cast Fantasy Magic, illusions that actually have substance. It isn’t until near the end of the series that Wignall learns how to use Fantasy Magic, allowing him to destroy some of the strongest monsters in the series.

Lihanna is introduced to viewers as one of the most talented mages in Regarden Magical Academy from day one. Valedictorian of her class, she’s referred to as “Miss Perfect”, even if she lacks confidence in her own abilities because she’s not part of the Upper Academy. Still, she continues to use all of her powers to bring pride to the legendary Owenzaus family.

Unlike other mages, Lihanna tends to fight in close-combat, using her lightning magic to increase her speed. This is in line with other Owenzaus mages, who were always known for fighting on the front lines. Even Will struggles to keep up with her speed, as she can destroy an entire army of monsters in a matter of seconds with her Lightning Sique Magic.

Sion Ulster Is In Constant Competition

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

One of the Top 5 students at Regarden Magic Academy, Sion seems almost destined for an illustrious career as a mage. Yet what really took him to the next level is witnessing Will Serfort’s power inside the dungeon. Though Sion had previously looked down on Will, his opinion changed when Will saved him from an Evil Sentinel. Seeing what Will was capable of caused Sion to redouble his efforts as a mage, growing in power until he became one of the most dangerous spell-casters at school.

Even early in the series, Sion’s training paid off by allowing him to vaporize a group of Frost Walkers in the dungeon. Later, during his battle with Will, he showed off Halcon Gardinas, a magic spell that conjured a guardian hawk made of pure flames. It’s this power that helped him survive after he and his allies were lost in the depths of the dungeon.

6

Julius Reinberg Wields Incredible Control Over Ice Magic

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

It can be easy to overlook Julius because of his behavior during some of Wistoria: Wand and Sword‘s awesome fights. After all, Will Serfort did manage to embarrass him in the final battle of the Grand Magic Festival. Yet this overlooks some key facts about Julius’ fight with Will. For one, Julius’ arrogance allowed Will to last longer than he realistically should have. Secondly though, Will was Julius’ worst match-up, as all of his magic Will was intimately familiar with from living with Elfaria.

While Julius is only the third best-performing student at Regarden, he’s the most powerful in terms of offensive spellcasting. His talent allowed him to learn some of Elfaria’s original spells, like creating ice clones to aid him in battle. Even while trapped in the dungeon, the other students all worked together to buy time, so Julius could cast his most powerful spell, Xelunea Caulis, on the Evil Grand Duke.

5

Edward Serfence Wields Tremendous Control Over His Magic

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

Edward Serfence is one of the teachers at Rigarden Magic Academy. Responsible for teaching children the History and Origins of Magic, he’s also a master Dark Mage himself. As expected of a teacher, he’s leagues beyond even the best students at the school.

During his fight with Will, Edward reveals he’s capable of chantless magic, a skill that takes diligent training to achieve. He prefers to use low-level spells like Dax Darbicans in battle, but this allows him some additional versatility most mages don’t have. He’s increased the power of the spell, but Edward can also cast nearly 20 of them at once, making him excellent at crowd control or any enemy with high-speed movement.

4

Cauldron Is The Headmistress Of Regarden Magical Academy

First Appearance: Episode 2, “As Though Undaunted”

Cauldron is another of the teachers introduced in Wistoria: Wand and Sword. She serves as the Headmistress of Regarden Magic Academy, making her the closest to actually going to the Tower with the upper-level mages. Unlike the other mages, she seems to have a much more holistic view of what makes a useful mage, instead of only focusing on whether someone can cast a spell.

Kakashi Hatake, All Might, and Master Roshi are among some of anime’s best, most iconic mentors ever.

Thus far, they haven’t really shown much of Cauldron in battle, but it’s possible to draw conclusions based on the way Wistoria‘s world works. Given everyone at Regarden values power above all else, it’s reasonable to assume that Cauldron attained the position of headmistress by being one of the strongest mages there. Also, while she spends much of her time in her office, everyone from Edward to Finn seems to carry the utmost respect for her.

3

Elfaria Albis Serfort Is The Youngest Magia Vander

First Appearance: Episode 1, “Like A Lone Sword”

A member of the Magia Vander, Elfaria Albis Serfort was Will’s childhood friend until the magic world recognized her incredible talents. While the two of them joined Regarden together, it wasn’t long before she was elevated into the Tower, soon after becoming the youngest Magia Vander ever. Since Magia Vander are the most powerful mages around, it’s unquestionable that she’s one of the strongest mages on the show.

Many of 2024’s biggest anime had massive expectations placed on them, and these truly lived up to the anticipation.

Elfaria was elevated quickly because of her talent for creating new magic spells, something that’s particularly impressive in their world. She created a dozen signature spells that together are known as El Glace Frosse; they’re so well respected that Julius partially learning even one of her spells made him one of the top students in the school. Still, Elfaria is known to be lazy and spends most of her time sleeping or in bed, meaning it’s not surprising to see her lagging behind other Magia Vander.

2

Zeo Thorzeus Reinbolt Is The Master Of Thunder Magic

First Appearance: Episode 3, “Order & Watcher”

Zeo is another member of the Magia Vander, which automatically propels him above not just almost every other mage, but every other character in Wistoria. He doesn’t appear a ton, but his brief appearances give the idea that he’s a man who values strength above all else. When it was suggested Will Serfort be invited to the tower, he was the only member of the Magia Vander who agreed, pointing out that if someone had the power he’d be happy to use them.

Zeo wields the power of lightning magic, which means he’s a superior version of Lihanna. He has such fine control of his lightning powers that he can teleport away in a flash of light. Also, his status as a Magia Vander means he has immense reserves of mana, allowing him to cast some of the most powerful spells.

Aaron Masterias Oldking Is The Leader Of The Magia Vander

Aaron Masterias Oldking is the oldest member of the Magia Vander, and its leader. His power is acknowledged by everyone within Regarden and the Tower, and he’s viewed as the strongest mage. Leader of the faction Masterias Noah, Aaron wields light magic in battle to obliterate his foes.

While Aaron doesn’t show up much in season one of Wistoria, his first appearance is a memorable one. He shows up on floor eleven to save Will and his allies, wiping out an army of some of Wistoria’s best monsters with his Loi Eluza spell. He cast this spell with zero effort, despite returning from the deep floors of the dungeon where he battled dark mages wielding mage slayer swords.
